Get ready to apply

We’re currently accepting registrations of interest for our Intelligence Officer Development Programme (IODP) before the application window opens on Monday 23 March 2026 at 10am. This programme attracts significant interest and may close within a few hours, so please plan to apply as soon as the window opens.

About us

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

Job description

About the programme

Intelligence Officers (IOs) lead investigations that disrupt threats and protect lives. Because it’s a complex role, no one steps into it overnight. The Intelligence Officer Development Programme (IODP) is a structured six‑year pathway designed to build your skills, confidence and experience to become a fully trained IO.

You don’t need Intelligence experience. We’re looking for transferable skills such as problem‑solving, curiosity, adaptability and sound judgement. You could be changing careers, an undergraduate currently working towards a degree, or someone who already holds a degree (or equivalent such as a Level 6 or 7 apprenticeship) in any subject and is ready to start your career with purpose. This programme will teach you everything you need to know to take on a role at the very heart of UK Intelligence.

Across the six-year programme, you will:

  • begin with a posting in a non-investigative area, gaining essential knowledge of MI5's mission, partners and ways of working (18 to 24 months)
  • complete two assessed training modules which you must pass to gain investigator accreditation (nine weeks)
  • move into two IO postings, in our Counter-Terrorism or Counter-Espionage teams, developing your investigative skills while collaborating with specialist operational teams though IOs themselves don’t carry out fieldwork (minimum four years)

You’ll be supported throughout by mentors, development partners and colleagues, and be part of a friendly cohort that learns and develops together.

Person specification

Register your interest

Before applications open on Monday 23 March, we’re inviting people from Black, Asian or other ethnic minority backgrounds to register their interest, as these groups are currently under‑represented in our workforce.

As part of the registration of interest, eligible candidates will be invited to online events before the application window opens. These include virtual insight and skills events to learn more about the organisation and role. These events last approximately one hour each:

Virtual Insight Events

  • Wednesday 18 March 2026, at 1pm and 5pm. The content will be the same across both sessions, so you only need to attend one

Virtual Skills Event

  • Thursday 19 March 2026 at 1pm

Once the registration of interest has closed, eligible candidates will receive an email with event invitations and joining details.

Please note, registering your interest does not constitute a job application and has no impact on the recruitment process. Anyone who registers their interest and then decides to apply, will need to complete an application form once the application window opens.

When applications open on Monday 23 March at 10am, we welcome applications from all eligible candidates. All applications are assessed solely on merit.

Several years ago, I was working in a team to plan a big event. My supervisor made us all work as a team before the big day. One of our activities has been to find out how each of us processes information...

Just as communication is essential when working remotely, so is organization. Because you won't have those opportunities in the elevator or a casual conversation in the lunchroom, you should take advantage of the little time you have in a video or phone conference...

10. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY ON A DAILY BASIS, IN YOUR WORK AND FOR YOUR PLEASURE?
