About us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means youll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
Job description
About the programme
Intelligence Officers (IOs) lead investigations that disrupt threats and protect lives. Because its a complex role, no one steps into it overnight. The Intelligence Officer Development Programme (IODP) is a structured six‑year pathway designed to build your skills, confidence and experience to become a fully trained IO.
You dont need Intelligence experience. Were looking for transferable skills such as problem‑solving, curiosity, adaptability and sound judgement. You could be changing careers, an undergraduate currently working towards a degree, or someone who already holds a degree (or equivalent such as a Level 6 or 7 apprenticeship) in any subject and is ready to start your career with purpose. This programme will teach you everything you need to know to take on a role at the very heart of UK Intelligence.
Across the six-year programme, you will:
- begin with a posting in a non-investigative area, gaining essential knowledge of MI5's mission, partners and ways of working (18 to 24 months)
- complete two assessed training modules which you must pass to gain investigator accreditation (nine weeks)
- move into two IO postings, in our Counter-Terrorism or Counter-Espionage teams, developing your investigative skills while collaborating with specialist operational teams though IOs themselves dont carry out fieldwork (minimum four years)
Youll be supported throughout by mentors, development partners and colleagues, and be part of a friendly cohort that learns and develops together.
