About the Role
The City of Dripping Springs is seeking a dedicated, forward-thinking Deputy City Attorney to support the City’s legal department. Working under the general direction of the City Attorney, you will provide counsel to the City Council, Mayor, boards, and municipal staff across a wide range of local government matters.
This role serves as the City’s primary legal advisor on Texas Public Information Act (TPIA) issues, drafts essential municipal legislation and agreements, and leverages modern legal technology to enhance municipal operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Open Government & Public Information: Act as the primary advisor on compliance with the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA), Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA), and records retention requirements.
- Contract & Document Review: Draft, negotiate, and review municipal contracts, leases, interlocal agreements, procurement documents, and bid proposals to protect City interests.
- Ordinances & Governance: Draft and review ordinances, resolutions, agenda items, and policies for City Council, commissions, and advisory boards; attend regular and evening meetings as assigned.
- Legal Research & Modern Tooling: Conduct research and prepare formal legal opinions, utilizing modern technology and City-approved artificial intelligence tools responsibly to streamline workflow and document review while exercising independent legal judgment.
- Court & Prosecution Support: Provide legal guidance for Municipal Court operations and serve as backup prosecutor for misdemeanor and code violations when needed.
- City Representation: Assist with special legal projects, litigation management, departmental guidance, and act on behalf of the City Attorney during periods of absence.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bar Admission: Currently licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas, or licensed in another U.S. common-law jurisdiction with the ability to obtain Texas authorization within an established timeframe.
- Experience: Background in municipal law, open government, land use/zoning, public procurement, local government contracting, or municipal prosecution is strongly preferred.
- Communication & Judgment: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with elected officials, staff, outside counsel, and the public.
- Schedule: Core hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with required attendance at scheduled evening Council and board meetings. This position is eligible for compensatory time off per City policy.
